Emmy Bean

Emmy Bean (°1980, Chicago, United States) creates performances, media art, installations and mixed media artworks. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Bean absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. This personal follow-up and revival of a past tradition is important as an act of meditation.

Her performances are presented with the aim not to provide an idealistic view but to identify where light and the environment are important. The energy of a place and its emotional and spiritual vibrations are always important. By questioning the concept of movement, she tries to focus on the activity of presenting. The character, shape or content of the presented artwork is secondary. The essential things are the momentary and the intention of presenting.

Her works isolate the movements of humans and/or objects. By doing so, new sequences are created which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion and sound. By replaying the work for each exhibition and pushing the evocative power of the work a little further, she finds that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humour that echoes our own vulnerabilities. The artist also considers movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking man who experiences a continuous loss.

Her collected, altered and own works are being confronted as aesthetically resilient, thematically interrelated material for memory and projection. The possible seems true and the truth exists, but it has many faces, as Hanna Arendt cites from Franz Kafka.

So here’s the thing. I have this New Year’s resolution about how I’m going to post things more often, let people know what I’m doing, update my website, etc etc etc.

BUT. The internet is leaching toxic bullshit into my brain every time I turn it on! It’s CHALLENGING, people. But this is what I’ve learned today. As long as I’m going to behave like my brain is a sponge for all the crap that gets pumped through the tubes into my computer every day, the least I can do is make some good choices about what I watch and what I read and what I re-post. And, you know, the amount of time I spend doing it. Once upon a time I toyed around with a 15-minutes-a-day-rule. Which now seems a little unreasonable, so let’s call it 30.

And here is a good thing I dredged up from the polluted waters today: Diane Cluck. Ever heard of her? Now you have.

Breathe deep. Eat some vegetables. Take a shower.

I remember taking an Anthropology class in college, and the professor was explaining that there is little “sexual dimorphism” in humans. He meant that there are few outward, observable differences between males and females. (Other than reproductive organs, of course.)

At the time I was confused, so I raised my hand. “I feel like it’s very easy to tell men and women apart,” I said.

“That’s due to culture,” he explained.
